Over 1/3 of stroke survivors experience communication difficulties, including difficulties in speaking, understanding, and communicating. Fatigue can also have a significant impact on people's recovery and rehabilitation.
The aim of neurorehabilitation following a stroke is to help people achieve the highest level of independence and quality of life possible, by improving or restoring their abilities and supporting them to compensate for functional disabilities.
Each year in the UK, around 100,000 people have strokes. While some stroke survivors experience a quick recovery in acute stroke units, many require neurological rehabilitation in specialist stroke inpatient rehabilitation centres. At Hamberley Neurocare, stroke patients can recover and be supported to regain as much independence as possible in our stroke unit.
This is the most frequent type of stroke, responsible for approximately 80% of all strokes. Ischaemic strokes occur when a blood clot obstructs blood flow to the brain. The clot can form in an artery that carries blood to the brain or elsewhere in the body. The main types of this kind of stroke are a thrombotic stroke, when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one of the arteries that supply blood to your brain and embolic stroke, when a blood clot or other debris forms away from your brain — commonly in your heart — and is swept through your bloodstream to become lodged in narrower brain arteries.
This type of stroke happens when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or leaks. Haemorrhagic strokes are less common but are usually more severe and deadly than ischaemic strokes. An intracerebral haemorrhage occurs when an artery in the brain bursts, flooding the surrounding tissue with blood. A Subarachnoid Haemorrhage refers to bleeding in the space between the brain and the surrounding membrane (the subarachnoid space), often caused by the bursting of an aneurysm (a weak spot in a blood vessel wall).
Following a stroke, neurorehabilitation, care and support is centred around reablement so people can live with more independence. Re-learning the skills of everyday living and developing new ways of compensating for the lost function is one essential part of this approach, with individuals benefiting from good clinical outcomes.
